Joint Camp Program - Total Hip & Knee
This program is designed to help patients take a proactive approach and has been proven to result in a faster, more successful recovery process following joint replacement surgery. Most patients follow the Joint Camp Program in this order:
1. Joint Pain Seminar
Joint Pain Seminar is a free class held periodically that is designed to educate you about the causes of joint pain and the latest treatment options available. Contact us to learn more.
2. Joint Camp Pre-Op Class
When you have decided to move forward with joint replacement surgery, you will need to attend our pre-op class. In pre-op class, you will plan and prepare for what happens before, during and after joint replacement surgery. By attending this class with your “coach” (a close friend or family member who can help you throughout the joint replacement process), you’ll feel more comfortable and knowledgeable about your upcoming surgery.
The Joint Camp pre-op class is an opportunity for you to get to know your healthcare team (and vice versa!) so we can decide together what will work best for you while you’re in the hospital and when you leave the hospital. Your care team will include:
- Orthopedic (joint camp) coordinator
- Care coordinator
- Physical therapist
- Ortho Navigator
Classes are held in the Cownie Conference Room at Mercy-West Lakes from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. every Tuesday. If your orthopedic doctor’s office didn’t schedule the class for you, call (515) 643-2663 and we will help you get signed up.
3. Joint Replacement Surgery
The joint replacement care team that you met in pre-op class will work with your orthopedic surgeon to make you comfortable and confident on surgery day. Soon your damaged joint will be replaced with a brand new one!
4. Joint Camp
After surgery, you’ll attend Joint Camp, where you’ll practice moving your new joint through group exercise and rehabilitation. You’ll work alongside other joint replacement patients, adding a sense of camaraderie to the recovery process. Your coach is encouraged to attend therapy sessions so they can help you with your therapy when you get home.
5. Post-Surgery Care
You aren’t alone when you leave the hospital after joint replacement surgery. Our orthopedic navigators will check in with you to make sure you are healing, moving and thriving! We can connect you to further resources if you need more help getting back to your daily activities.
