Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

What is breast lift (mastopexy)?

  • Raises the nipple to a more appropriate position and re-shapes the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the tissue
  • Sometimes the areola also becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well

  • Achieve a lifted, more youthful breast shape and firmness.

What Breast Lift Will NOT Do

  • Breast lift will NOT change the size of your breasts, but it will lift all of your current breast tissue into a lifted “mound” of tissue and achieve a more youthful shape
  • If you want your breasts to look larger in size, consider a breast augmentation along with a breast lift

You May be a Good Breast Lift Candidate if:

  • You have stable weight
  • You do not smoke
  • You are bothered by lost shape and volume to breasts
  • Your breasts have flatter, elongated shape
  • When not supported by a bra, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples point downward
  • Your skin is stretched and areolas are enlarged
  • One breast is lower than the other
  • Performed under general anesthesia
  • Incision types – depends on how saggy the breasts are and your anatomy
    • Around the areola
    • Around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease
    • Around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease
  • Breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness
  • Nipple/areola repositioned to natural/youthful height
  • Excess skin removed
  • Results are immediately visible
  • Scars continue to mature and fade for 1 year, and most are virtually unnoticeable. The best way to predict how you scar is how you have scarred before

  • After surgery you will be taken to a recovery area to be closely monitored after surgery
  • You will wear a support bra given to you by our team. This will minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal
  • You will be allowed to go home a few hours after surgery
  • You will need to wear the surgical support bra for the first 2-4 weeks
  • After 48 hours, you will have reduced activity for a few days, and you will experience soreness for the first week
    • Intermittent soreness can last for a few weeks
  • Generally, you can resume exercise 4 weeks after surgery

What Results Should I Expect?

  • Many patients find it helpful to review breast lift photos and learn about what to expect during recovery as they navigate the decision-making process to have surgery
  • Satisfaction with your new breast shape and body image should continue to grow and improve as you recover from surgery
  • Final results will continue to evolve over the first year, but will be very close to final at about 3-4 months after surgery
  • Results will be long-lasting, if…
    • You maintain your weight
    • Keep a healthy lifestyle
    • You have completed child bearing
  • Your breasts will continue to age with your body. Skin become more elastic as you age and the lifted breast is no different than the rest of your body in this aging process

Photos are a great way to discuss a procedure, which is why we love to use them!

Photos are also a great way to help you understand your individualized and realistic outcome. Because each person is different in size, shape, body type, and desire, we feel that photos are best “interpreted” and discussed together in consultation. That is why we will use them in a one-on-one discussion that will help you understand the process and results that are achievable in your particular case.
