Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty...

  • Is one of the most delicate surgical procedures
    • The delicate framework of the nose is manipulated to give immediate AND long-term results
    • We focus your results NOT only on the next year, but the next 10 YEARS!
  • Is done as an outpatient – you go home the same day of surgery
  • Incisions are hidden and camouflaged
  • Is a personal decision and the initial time spent before you even enter the operating room helps ensure that we have the same expectations going into surgery

Three Reasons to Have Rhinoplasty

  1. Cosmetic
  2. Functional breathing problems
  3. BOTH

Cosmetic:

  • Subtle changes bring the nose into harmony with other unique facial features
  • Reshaping and adjusting proportions (of the bridge, nostrils, nasal tip, etc.) helps to provide a more aesthetic balance to the face
  • Patients feel a sense of self-confidence and facial balance

Breathing problems (Functional rhinoplasty):

  • Often from a previous broken nose or birth defect
  • Restores lost function of the nasal passageway
  • Can be covered by insurance, but cosmetic work to the nasal tip will not be covered by insurance

BOTH (cosmetic and functional):

  • Sometimes you want both breathing and aesthetics of your nose improved, especially if you have had trauma to the nose
  • Often, these cases will not be covered by insurance because of the cosmetic component. But you should talk to your Mercy plastic surgeon about options
  • Some patients have had a rhinoplasty in the past and that initial procedure failed to produce the desired effects. Some may opt to have a second, revision rhinoplasty
  • Requires greater level of expertise and precision because the original structure of the nose has been changed
  • Patients choose to undergo revision rhinoplasty for a number of reasons, including:
    • Original condition was not improved
    • Breathing problems were not corrected, or were made worse
    • Initially pleased with results, but the nose has changed over time
    • Nose injured after previous surgery
  • Frequently involves rebuilding the nose structure with cartilage taken from other areas (rib, or ear)
  • Recovery time is similar to primary rhinoplasty

What is Recovery Like?

  • You will likely have some minor bruising or swelling that will resolve in 2 weeks
  • Typically patients feel comfortable returning to work or daily activities in 5-7 days
  • Make-up can usually conceal bruising around the eyes after one week
  • Most patients also feel a boost in self-confidence as a result of their procedure at 3 weeks, once bruising and initial swelling has gone away

Photos are a great way to discuss a procedure, which is why we love to use them!

Photos are also a great way to help you understand your individualized and realistic outcome. Because each person is different in size, shape, body type, and desire, we feel that photos are best “interpreted” and discussed together in consultation. That is why we will use them in a one-on-one discussion that will help you understand the process and results that are achievable in your particular case.
