Internal Medicine Residency: Graduate Testimonials

See what our graduates are saying about the Internal Medicine Residency Program:

I am very satisfied with the training I received during my time at Mercy Medical Center. Everyone is extremely helpful and supportive; through the years I knew that Dr. Olson and the staff wanted me to be successful with my career path. The residency is built with balance in mind, and has created a culture that allows training to actually be enjoyable. Being in a large medical center, I was able to see a large volume of "bread and butter" as well as "once-in-a-lifetime" cases, making me very comfortable with managing patients in the hospital. If I had to do it all over again, I would not hesitate in my decision to choose Mercy!

Barry Cooper, DO, 2018 Graduate

After completing medical school, I was fortunate enough to be offered a position in the internal medicine residency at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. I was provided many opportunities for personal and professional growth and development during my time as a resident. After only being the second class of residents to go through the program, it gave us the unique opportunity to work with faculty to shape the program to best fit our learning style. I had the opportunity to complete research in my field of interest and do elective rotations that were applicable to my future. One of the aspects I appreciated most about residency at Mercy was the ability to work directly with attendings and having opportunity to gain experience with many different procedures. The dynamic among the residents also played a significant role in my decision to choose Mercy. It is a very encouraging environment that is collegial and conducive to learning. I had more than sufficient support from our program director, Dr. Olson, as well as the many support staff in the residency office. The core and specialty rotations at Mercy gave me the foundation I needed to pursue subspecialty training and be competitive. I felt well prepared transitioning to Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic and Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

Gabriel Anders, DO, MHA, 2017 Graduate

My residency experience at Mercy Medical Center was definitely worthwhile and I will always look back fondly on my time spent there.  I developed life long friendships with many of my co-residents and will always be greatly indebted to the Attending’s and support staff who enhanced my education and supported me in pursuing a Cardiology fellowship, and especially Dr Olson who is a great program director and one of the nicest people you will ever meet.  Although it is a new IM program, I never felt at any time that I was not getting a great education, and am proud to be a part of the first graduating class.

Rajveer Sangera, DO, 2016 Graduate

Being in the first class of the Internal Medicine Residency at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, I was nervous at the beginning. It turned out the program offered a lot of opportunities. It provides strong academics, excellent opportunities in all aspects of medicine, including hospitalist, community medicine, and specialist. The faculty is very supportive and approachable.  Dr. Olson, the program director is very dedicated to teaching and is always willing to listen resident's input to improving the program. There is resident autonomy at all levels and actively supported by faculty. The program offers great benefits, such as excellent salary, educational fund, stipends for housing and meals. It is centrally located in a regionally diverse mid size city.  I highly recommend that you consider completing your IM residency at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, regardless of your career goal.
