About Mercy Pharmaceutical Services
The mission of the Pharmacy Department is to provide evidence based pharmaceutical care for all patients within the Mercy healthcare system. This patient-focused, outcome-oriented approach to patient therapy provides cost-effective utilization of medications.
Clinical pharmacists monitor and evaluate each patient’s response to medication regimens. Pharmacists provide recommendations to and collaborate with other members of the health care team during multidisciplinary rounds. Pharmacists also assist with TPN and pharmacokinetic management, antibiotic selection and dosing, renal dosing of medications and pain management. Skills-based technicians assist the pharmacists with technical functions in the department.
Pharmacy quality management, medication safety, adverse drug reaction reporting, medication use evaluation and formulary review are components of drug information services.
The Pharmacy Department provides instruction to pharmacy students from the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. In addition to a general hospital rotation, rotations offered include oncology, anticoagulation management, infectious disease, internal medicine, administrative pharmacy, drug information, cardiology, critical care and other areas of practice.
There are also three ambulatory pharmacies. This includes the Mercy Outpatient Pharmacy located on the central campus, Mercy West Outpatient Pharmacy located in Clive and the Mercy North Outpatient Pharmacy in Ankeny.
