DES MOINES, Iowa—Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines has been ranked as a U.S. News & World Report Best Regional Hospital in Iowa, with high performance in five medical specialties.
Mercy was the only Des Moines hospital to receive this distinction in the central Iowa region. Mercy was selected because of high performance in the specialties of: Cancer; Gynecology; Pulmonology; Gastroenterology; and Nephrology.
“This recognition affirms the quality of care provided to our patients,” said Mercy President & CEO Dave Vellinga. “Our physicians and allied health professionals are committed to excellence. They work tirelessly to deliver the best care experience for every patient every time in the safest environment possible.”
Nearly 4,800 hospitals were part of the 23rd annual 2012 – 2013 U.S. News & World Report review. This year only 732 hospitals received Americas ‘Best or Best Regional Hospital designations from U.S. News & World Report. The magazine indicated the number of hospitals chosen was lower because fewer hospitals met “high performing” standards in at least one of 16 clinical specialties. U.S. News indicated it also gave less weight this year to hospital reputation and more to hospital patient data that is available to the public through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Hospital Association (AMA).
In Iowa Mercy ranked as the third best overall hospital. Mercy was joined in the Best Regional Hospital category by two hospitals in the Western Iowa region— Mercy Health Network member Mercy Medical Center – Sioux City and Catholic Health Initiatives member Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was the top ranked hospital in the state.
