Mercy recognized for safe, quality bariatric surgery care

Mercy Bariatric Surgery Center earns OptumHealth Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

Friday, July 8, 2011

Mercy Bariatric Surgery Center was recently re-designated as an OptumHealth Bariatric Center of Excellence (COE). To receive this recognition, programs must be designated as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The re-designation process requires a thorough review of clinical outcome data, quality processes, compliance with nationally recognized guidelines and capabilities.

“Achieving this designation for the second straight time is an indicator of the high quality care our patients receive each and every day,” says Mark Smolik, M.D., medical director of Mercy’s Weight Loss & Nutrition Center. “Our outcomes and low complication rates are consistently among the best in the nation, and we take pride in knowing that a rigorous review process again confirms our excellence.”

Patients of programs designated as an OptumHealth Bariatric COE benefit from safe bariatric surgical care, low rate of complications from surgery, highly experienced minimally-invasive surgeons, Dr. Mark Smolik and Dr. Steve Cahalan and top quality facilities and technology.

Inclusion in the OptumHealth Bariatric Centers of Excellence network, signals to consumers and health care professionals that Mercy’s bariatric surgery program meets or exceeds nationally recognized bariatric surgery standards. This information enables consumers and payers to make informed choices and become more engaged in health care decisions.
