Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines names new Chief Physician Leaders

Friday, January 24, 2014

DES MOINES, Iowa—Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines is pleased to announce two new Physician Leadership appointments. Wael Haidar, M.D., MBA, has been named Chief Physician Executive (CPE), effective immediately, and Tommy Ibrahim, M.D., MHA, has been named Chief Physician Officer (CPO), effective in May 2014.

Following an extensive search and interview process, it became clear Mercy Medical Staff leadership would require the skills and experience offered by Dr. Haidar and Dr. Ibrahim. As a result, the Search Committee recommended dividing the Chief Physician responsibilities into two distinct positions: 1) Chief Physician Executive – whose responsibilities include the physician enterprise, physician alignment, Catholic Health Initiatives national physician initiatives, and oversight of the Mercy Clinics; and 2) Chief Physician Officer – whose responsibilities will include physician engagement, Medical Staff Services and developing a culture of quality and safety.

“These two physicians each bring proven leadership experience and an ability to foster a sense of teamwork in achieving excellence,” said Mercy President Robert P. Ritz. “In their respective positions both have demonstrated a commitment to continual improvement of our health care delivery system and the patient experience. We also offer our sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Dale Andres, current Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Andres will continue to serve as the Medical Director of Mercy’s Clinical Laboratory while also assisting Mercy in further development of regional outreach programs. Dr. Andres has contributed greatly to the technological advancement and practice of laboratory medicine at Mercy and in Iowa. He will assist Dr. Ibrahim with his transition to his new role until June 30, 2014.”

In his role as Chief Physician Executive, Dr. Haidar will provide strategic direction and organization of Mercy’s physician network – including all physician enterprise activities, contractual relationships and clinical integration initiatives.  In addition, he will serve as the Catholic Health Initiatives – Iowa Division representative on national teams and committees, assuring the continued growth and development of a comprehensive clinical and medical network, serving patient populations across the continuum of care.  He will also act as leader of Mercy Clinics, Inc., and serve on the Board of Directors for the Mercy Accountable Care Organization.  Dr. Haidar earned his medical degree from American University of Beirut in Beirut,

Lebanon and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Ill.

As Chief Physician Officer, Dr. Ibrahim will be responsible for all clinical quality initiatives, operation of the Medical Staff Services Department, Hospital Medicine specialties, and leadership and management of Medical Education and Research and Risk Management functions. Additionally, he will work closely with the Leadership Team to assure the highest quality of care and safety for all patients we serve.  Dr. Ibrahim comes to Mercy from St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill. where he has served as Chief Physician Executive since 2011. Dr. Ibrahim received his medical degree from St. Christopher’s College of Medicine in Cambridge, England, and holds a Master’s in Health Administration from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.
