“Better Choices, Better Health” is a program that was developed, implemented and extensively researched over the last 20 years by Stanford University. It has become widely available across the United States in recent years, and Mercy is now offering this evidence-based program to its employees and the community through a partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health and Polk County Health Department.
“Better Choices, Better Health” empowers peopleto be better self-managers of their chronic conditions and their health. It is not specific to any one disease, but instead addresses a variety of topics that are commonly encountered when dealing with ongoing health conditions, including asthma, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, depression, COPD, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, mental health conditions, and many more. The 6-week workshop will be held weekly for two and a half hours at various community centers, churches, and businesses in the community at no cost to attendees. Workshops are interactive in nature and focus on action-planning and problem solving and topics include dealing with difficult emotions, nutrition, physical activity, and effective communication. Each week, the workshop will also highlight different key tools participants can use to help manage pain, reduce their symptoms, and feel better overall.
