David (Dave) H. Vellinga is Senior Vice President for Operations for Catholic Health Initiatives and President & CEO of Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, an 802-bed acute care, not-for-profit Catholic hospital situated on three campuses in the Des Moines metro area. With more than 7,000 employees and a medical staff of more than 1,000 physician and allied health providers including 380 employed physicians and 130 allied health professionals, Mercy offers a wide array of programs and services to meet the health care needs of the communities it serves. These include a variety of hospital-based specialties and subspecialties; an outpatient clinic system with five Urgent Care clinics, four Quick Care clinics and more than 50 family practice and specialty clinics located throughout central Iowa; and extensive senior services that include a 150-bed nursing home, a 64-unit assisted living facility and 354 units of independent living facility. Mercy also provides services and support to a network of critical access hospitals and health care facilities (Mercy Health Network – Central Iowa) in 18 central Iowa communities and has 10 wholly-owned subsidiaries – including Mercy College of Health Sciences.
In addition, Dave serves as CEO of Mercy Health Network (MHN) – a joint operating venture between Catholic Health Initiatives, headquartered in Denver, CO, and Trinity Health, headquartered in Novi, MI. Currently, MHN consists of 11 owned hospitals, one joint venture specialty hospital affiliate, 30 affiliated community hospitals, 142 clinics and more than 13,000 employees working throughout Iowa and in portions of Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota.
Prior to beginning at Mercy Medical Center–Des Moines on Jan. 1, 1999, Dave served as President & CEO for Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa in Mason City. Mercy North Iowa was formed as a result of a 1993 merger between two Mason City hospitals – St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where Dave was President & CEO, and North Iowa Medical Center. Prior to the merger, Dave also served in various administrative roles at Mercy and with the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
A graduate of Northwestern College (Orange City, IA) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, Dave earned a Master’s degree in Hospital and Health Care Administration from the University of Iowa. His involvement in many professional associations and civic activities reflect his passion for improving health care in Iowa, and his honors include being recognized as one of the “10 Emerging Leaders in Healthcare” by the Healthcare Forum (1990) and receiving the Iowa Hospital Association’s “Ship’s Wheel” award in 1991.
Dave is married and resides in Clive, a suburb of Des Moines, with his wife, Nancy. Their youngest daughter, Megan, received her Master’s degree from the University of California–Santa Monica and is a social worker in Denver. Their daughter, Jill, a graduate of the University of Iowa, is married and lives in Ankeny with her husband and their four daughters. Their son, Nathan, holds a degree from Cornell College and a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado. He and his wife, Tara, live in Denver and have one son. Aside from spending time with his family, Dave’s interests include long-distance running, swimming, bicycling and other wellness activities; community involvement; and international health services.
