Bone Density Exams/DEXA

Osteoporosis is a disease that reduces the strength of your bones, causing them to become brittle and prone to fractures. Today there are a variety of effective ways to diagnose and manage the symptoms of osteoporosis. Early detection is one of the best ways to protect yourself from the ongoing effects of this condition.

A bone density exam or DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry), is a test used to determine the presence of osteoporosis. This test measures the bone mineral density or bone mass in your body. Test results will help your doctor determine if you need to take specific steps to improve your bone health. The bone density test is simple and painless and involves very little radiation (approximately 1/10 of the dosage of a chest X-ray).
