Prostate Cancer Symptoms and Risks

Symptoms

  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Inability to empty bladder
  • Slow or hard to start stream of urine
  • Frequent urination especially at night
  • Difficulty with erections
  • Pain or burning with urination
  • Pain or stiffness in lower back, hips or upper thighs
  • Most often there are no symptoms until late in the disease

Risk Factors

  • Age – most prostate cancer is found in men over age 55
  • Race – prostate cancer is more common in blacks than whites
  • Strong family history (first degree relative with prostate cancer)

  • Most common cancer in men – 33% of all new cancer cases in men are prostate
  • 10% of all cancer deaths in men are due to prostate
  • 16.67% of men (1 in 6) will get prostate cancer
  • 54.6% of Iowa men had a PSA test within the last year
