Prostate Cancer Symptoms and Risks
Symptoms
- Blood in urine or semen
- Inability to empty bladder
- Slow or hard to start stream of urine
- Frequent urination especially at night
- Difficulty with erections
- Pain or burning with urination
- Pain or stiffness in lower back, hips or upper thighs
- Most often there are no symptoms until late in the disease
Risk Factors
- Age – most prostate cancer is found in men over age 55
- Race – prostate cancer is more common in blacks than whites
- Strong family history (first degree relative with prostate cancer)

- Most common cancer in men – 33% of all new cancer cases in men are prostate
- 10% of all cancer deaths in men are due to prostate
- 16.67% of men (1 in 6) will get prostate cancer
- 54.6% of Iowa men had a PSA test within the last year
- 57.2% of Iowa men had a digital rectal exam in the last year
