Pathologists

MCL is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The CAP accreditation is recognized by both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

Mercy’s pathologists are led by Dr. Dale Andres, Chief Pathologist, and provide medical direction to the laboratory and consultative services to the medical staff. They welcome the opportunity to share their expertise with you. Please do not hesitate to call with clinical questions.

Dale Andres

Dale Andres, D.O.

Dale F. Andres, D.O. organized Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in July 2005.  His special interests include blood banking and dermatopathology. He is the Chief Pathologist. Prior to coming to Des Moines, Dr. Andres was the Chief Pathologist and Laboratory Medical Director at Mercy North Iowa in Mason City. He was Chief Pathologist of the 5th General Hospital in Stuttgart Germany from 1979-1982, Chief of Blood Bank at the Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco in 1982.  Dr. Andres received his training at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. His internship was at Brooke Army Medical Center and his pathology residency at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, California. He has served in the US Army Reserves and was the Commanding General of the 330th Medical Brigade in Chicago, Illinois. Dale and his wife, Marie, have two children, Dr. Matt Andres (a pathologist here at Mercy), and Ashley.  He also has two grandchildren. He lives in West Des Moines.

Matthew Andres

Matthew Andres, D.O.

Matthew W. Andres, D.O. joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in July, 2006. His special interests include hematopathology, flow cytometry and transplant.  Dr Matt Andres completed his hematopathology fellowship at the University of Arizona as well as his anatomic and clinical pathology residency.  His medical training was completed at Des Moines University.  Matt and his wife, Terri have two children, Connor and Madelynn, and reside in Ankeny.

Adam Bell

Adam Bell, M.D.

Adam M. Bell, M.D. joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in July, 2010. His special interests include hematopathology, flow cytometry and transplant. Dr. Bell completed a hematopathology fellowship at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.  He also completed a surgical pathology fellowship as well as his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Iowa.  Adam and his wife, Ember, live in Des Moines.

Clinton Crowder

Clinton Crowder, M.D.

Clinton D. Crowder, M.D. joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in August, 2010. His special interests include gastrointestinal pathology.  Dr. Crowder completed a gastrointestinal pathology fellowship at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He also completed a one-year surgical pathology fellowship at Mayo Clinic. His initial anatomic and clinical pathology residency was performed at the University of Minnesota. Clinton, his wife, Emily, and three children Emma, Josiah and Joshua live in Des Moines.

Joseph Eaton, D.O.

Joseph Eaton, D.O.

Joseph Eaton, D.O. joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in July, 2013.  Dr. Eaton completed a cytopathology fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana.  His initial anatomic and clinical pathology residence was also completed at Indiana University.  Dr. Eaton attended Des Moines University for his D.O. degree.  He and his wife, Becky, have a home here in Des Moines.   Dr. Eaton was born and raised in the Lacrosse, Wisconsin area. Avina Kolareth

Avina Kolareth, M.D.

Avina Kolareth, M.D. has been a pathologist here at Mercy since July 2004. Her special interests include surgical pathology and cytopathology. She was born in India and did her medical school and internship in India. She completed her Anatomic and Clinical pathology residency as well as fellowships in Surgical and Cytopathology at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Dr. Kolareth and her husband, Shaj, and daughter Sunita, reside in West Des Moines.

Joseph Mitros, M.D.

Joseph Mitros, M.D.

Joseph Mitros, M.D., joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in July, 2013. Dr. Mitros completed a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.  His initial anatomic and clinical pathology residency was also completed at the University of Iowa along with his M.D. degree.  Dr. Mitros is originally from the Iowa City area. Carolyn Pease

Carolyn Pease, M.D.

Carolyn S. Pease, M.D.  joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in January, 2008. Her special interests include hematopathology and flow cytometry. She received her advanced diploma of medical sciences from the International Medical University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  She received her M.D. degree from the McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in 2001.  She completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency as well as fellowships in surgical and hematopathology at the University of Minnesota in 2007. Carolyn and her husband, Martin, have three children, Andrew, and Gregory, and James with another child expected in September.  They live in Clive.

Soraya Rodriguez

Soraya Rodriguez, M.D.

Soraya Rodriguez, M.D. joined Pathology Associates of Central Iowa in August, 2011. Her special interests include fine needle aspiration cytology. She practices at Grinnell Regional Medical Center and here in Des Moines.  Dr. Rodriguez is originally from Cuba.   Her anatomic and clinical pathology and cytopathology fellowship were performed at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Dr. Rodriguez has one son and daughter-in-law, living in Florida. Soraya and her husband, Dr. Jerry Wehr, reside in Grinnell. 

Ramona Thompson

Ramona Thompson, M.D.

Ramona Thompson, M.D. joined Pathology Associates of central Iowa in July, 2009.  Her special interest is cytopathology. She received her M.D. degree from the University of Minnesota in 2004. She completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Minnesota as well as her Cytopathology Fellowship. Ramona, her husband, Jonathan, and daughter Jocelyn live in Johnston.
