Mercy Clinics History

Mercy Clinics was created with the primary goal of providing convenient and accessible health care to central Iowans – a vision shared by then Chief of Medical Staff Steve Gleason, D.O., and Mercy CEO Patricia Sullivan. That vision became a reality when the first Mercy Clinic opened at Valley West Mall in August 1983. In the months that followed, Mercy opened five additional family practice clinics – including locations in downtown Des Moines and Indianola – and before long, several specialty services were added to Mercy Clinics as well.

During the next 30 years, Mercy Clinics continued to expand services throughout the metro area, building new clinics and moving existing clinics to meet the health care needs of the community. Steady growth was driven by an increased demand for convenient access to vital services offered by health care professionals.

Today, Mercy Clinics proudly operates more than 50 clinics – including family practice clinics, specialty clinics, s urgent care clinics and pediatric clinics – in Polk, Dallas, Warren, Guthrie and Wapello counties. Mercy Clinics is home to the most advanced treatments, many of which are exclusive services only offered by professionals at Mercy. With more than 150 physicians, 110 mid-level providers and more than 1,000 non-provider, nursing and support staff, Mercy Clinics is completely prepared to deliver the best possible experiences and outcomes for patients of all ages.
