Perinatal Center of Iowa and Mercy Medical Center—Des Moines present the fifth annual Controversies and Advances in Perinatal Medicine conference.

This conference is designed to provide health care professionals with the expanded knowledge of existing and evolving clinical protocols in the care of women experiencing high risk pregnancies. The conference will focus on active management of labor, obstetrical emergencies, cytomegalovirus, Irish C-section rates, cervical insufficiency and the latest information in diagnosis and management of gestational diabetes.

Presenters

  • Michael Robson, M.D., is the Master of National Maternity Hospital (NMH) at Holles Street in Dublin, Ireland – the busiest maternity unit in Europe. Dr. Robson was born in England, grew up in Norway and began as a registrar in the late 1980s and as an assistant master in the early 1990s. One of Dr. Robson’s major interests is developing and expanding community care in maternity services.
  • Kimberly Leslie, M.D.,is the head of the University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Leslie earned a bachelor of science from Baylor University and a bachelor of science degree in biology and biochemistry from Texas Christian University. She holds a medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Leslie completed residencies at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, and Georgetown University Affiliated Hospitals, where she also completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. Leslie’s patient care specialization includes maternal-fetal medicine, fetal echocardiography, cancer in pregnancy, cholestasis during pregnancy and operative obstetrics. Her research interests include molecular biology of estrogen and progesterone receptors, anti-estrogens in the female reproductive tract, endometrial cancer, interactions between epidermal growth factor and hormone receptors and cholestasis.
  • Francesco De Seta, M.D., is an assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at theUniversity of Trieste, Italy, where he is involved in clinical practice, teaching and research in the areas of premature birth and gynecologic infectious diseases. After receiving his medical degree the Medical School of Pavia in 1991, he did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology where he now works with an internationally recognized group that was responsible for the first paper on the proteomic analysis of human cervico-vaginal fluids published in the journal “Proteome Research” and later, in collaboration with Sergio Crovella, studied Mannose binding lectin in recurrent bacterial vaginosis. Dr. De Seta recently become associated with the international prematurity research group organized by the World Health Organization.
  • Neil T. Mandsager, M.D., FACOG is a perinatalogist with the Perinatal Center of Iowa and the Medical Director of the Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines’ Maternity Triage and Treatment Unit. He has been in Des Moines since completing his Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati in 1993. Dr. Mandsager is board-certified in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
  • Joseph Hwang, M.D., FACOG is a perinatologist with the Perinatal Center of Iowa. He attended college and medical school at Loyola University Chicago. He then ventured to the east coast, where he completed his OB-Gyn residency at Georgetown University, followed by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Yale University. Dr. Hwang is board-certified in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Mercy Medical Center—Des Moines designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.5 AMA PRSA Category 1 credit(s)™.

Nursing CEU: 0.78 Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider #17. Full attendance of the program is required. No partial credit will be given.

Ultrasound CEU: Seven CEU credits are pending approval by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound (SDMS). Full attendance of the program is required. No partial credit will be given.
