Geriatric Fellowship

Sponsoring Institution: Mercy Medical Center

Affiliation: Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education

Start Date: July 1, 2005

The geriatric fellowship is a one-year clinical fellowship set in an urban community with exposure to rural medicine. Des Moines, the capitol of Iowa, has an abundance of geriatric patients both locally and in surrounding small communities.  Two fellows per year will work with expert faculty and family medicine residents, both inpatient and outpatient, in a well-rounded curriculum including research and public health.  The geriatric fellow will gain expertise in the full spectrum of care of the elderly including well exams and screening to palliative care and end of life issues in the hospital, clinic, institutional and home environment.  Des Moines is a center for refugee immigration bringing an opportunity to understand aging in different cultures.  The fellow will be well prepared for clinical practice and to pass the Certificate of Added Qualification examination.

History

Mercy Family Medicine Residency Program was started in 1997. The residency received provisional accredited by the ACGME in 1998 and full accreditation in 2002. The fellowship was accredited in January 2005 to begin July, 2005.
