Health Advocacy for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Community

Mercy’s Interpretation Services Department employs a Cultural Advocacy Health Services Coordinator to ensure that central Iowa¹s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community has access to quality health care services.

This individual helps patients and family members access sign language interpreters and auxiliary aids; coordinates health education and outreach activities; leads a community steering committee that examines access issues for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community; and educates sign language interpreters.
