Mercy’s commitment to your health and well-being doesn’t end when you leave the hospital or doctor’s office. There are times when you may need health care in the comfort of your own home, and Mercy is proud to bring high quality, compassionate care home to you through our Home Health Services Department. Our staff of dedicated professionals serves people of all ages – including those who are temporarily disabled, are acutely ill or who require long-term care.
From medical check-ups to rehabilitation therapies to nursing and hospice care, Mercy offers a comprehensive range of licensed home care services to patients who live within a 50-mile radius of Des Moines, which includes all or part of Polk, Dallas, Warren, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Marshall and Story Counties.
All Mercy Home Health programs are accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and the majority of services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and/or private health insurance. Coverage is always explained prior to providing care.
Mercy Home Health Services offers several comprehensive programs:
- Home nursing care for individuals who are ill but do not require hospitalization
- Home nursing care for new mothers and their infants
- Home care for patients requiring intravenous therapy
- Private care by nurse aides/attendants for people who are frail, infirm or even well
- Hospice care for the terminally ill
The majority of our home-care services are covered by insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Before we begin caring for you, we’ll discuss your coverage with you and any expenses you might incur. That way, you’ll know in advance exactly what to expect.

Sometimes people who are recuperating from an illness are too weak to attend to their personal needs and the activities of daily living, but they really don’t need the services of a registered nurse. Family members often do not have the time or resources to devote full- or part-time comprehensive care to their loved one at home. That is when a Mercy private-care team can help.
Our certified nurse aides and non-certified attendants make it possible for loved ones to remain in their own homes, while affording family members time away from care giving. Aides and attendants are available around the clock, every day of the week.
Our services include, but aren’t limited to:
- Light housekeeping
- Assistance with walking, prescribed exercises or moving the patient
- Doing laundry
- Planning and preparing meals
- Running errands
- Providing companionship/supervision
- Accompanying patient to appointments
- Providing respite to family members during a loved one’s hospitalization
When private care begins, we assess each individual’s health condition at no charge. That information and any subsequent condition changes are shared with the person’s physician.
Our services usually are not covered by insurance, but one of our staff members will visit with you to discuss service rates and options.
Mercy’s Home Care staff provides medical and home care assistance with the same level of expertise and attention that you would receive at the hospital or clinic.
Our team will work with you and your physician to develop an individualized, multi-disciplinary plan of care that may include nursing care, physical therapy, speech/language pathology, occupational therapy, social services and home health aides.
Mercy also offers specialized programs for pediatric care, maternal health and newborn care, wound/ostomy care and pain services.
Home care nurse coordinators are available by telephone or appointment (at Mercy Hospital Medical Center) to answer any questions you may have about how our program can help you or your family member. After all, there’s no place like home.
Your physician tells you that you can go home from the hospital as long as you can receive I.V. therapy. Which home-care agency should you call? The answer is Mercy Home Health Services. Our knowledgeable infusion-care staff follows the strictest nursing and pharmaceutical standards while treating you with the greatest respect and compassion. You’ll receive expert care at the lowest-possible cost.
Your good health is our goal. Before making a recommendation, our infusion coordinator or pharmacist can speak with your doctor to determine whether your treatment plan can be successfully accomplished in your home.
Your infusion-care staff will:
- Thoroughly train you or your designated caregiver, with step-by-step instruction, about the use of infusion equipment and supplies
- Be present at each infusion until you or your caregiver can properly and safely administer therapy
- Regularly assess and monitor your response to therapy by obtaining laboratory samples ordered by your physician
- Recommend the appropriate infusion pump for your therapy
Most home infusions involve one or more of these:
- Analgesia (pain control)
- Cardiac medication
