Welcome to the Mercy Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program. We have partnered with Primary Health Care, Inc., to form the Iowa Medical Education Collaborative (IMEC) to enhance graduate medical opportunities in Iowa. IMEC serves as our program sponsor. The inpatient services and program management are conducted by Mercy Medical Center in coordination with ambulatory care experiences at Primary Health Care, Inc., and with other affiliated Mercy physicians. The continuity clinic experiences are available at the Mercy Capitol Internal Medicine Clinic under my direction.
The Mercy Internal Medicine Residency program is a three-year program, with ten residents at each postgraduate level. In addition to expansive inpatient and ambulatory internal medicine exposure, our residents rotate through a wide spectrum of internal medicine subspecialties–including behavioral health, cardiology, critical care, endocrinology, geriatrics, GI, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology and rheumatology. Selective rotations are available in the senior years to allow the residents to customize their schedule to optimize experience for future practice and/or fellowship plans.
The clinical faculty in our program instructs and supervises residents in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Faculty members include general internists and hospitalists, as well as fellowship-trained subspecialists. Residents will be given the opportunity to become proficient in procedures related to the practice of internal medicine.
We have planned a comprehensive didactic program to prepare our trainees to practice state-of-the-art internal medicine. The curriculum incorporates case-based learning, evidence-based medicine, and basic medical science in regularly scheduled conferences including Morning Report, M&M, Lectures/Conferences, Multidisciplinary Conferences, and Journal Club. SIM and SPAL skills labs are conducted at Des Moines University along with the OPTI Resident Education Day Programs (including OMM). BLS/ACLS certification is provided and required for all residents.
We invite you to explore this site to better familiarize yourself with the wide offerings of our residency program. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.
