About Mercy

Internal Medicine Residency Program Overview

Welcome to the Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mercy Medical Center.  Mercy has partnered with Primary Heath Care, Inc., to form the Iowa Medical Education Collaborative (IMEC) to enhance graduate medical opportunities in Iowa.  IMEC is the Internal Medicine Residency sponsor.  Inpatient services and program management are conducted by Mercy Medical Center in coordination with the ambulatory care experiences with Primary Health Care, Inc., and other affiliated Mercy physicians.  The residency outpatient continuity clinic is also a part of this collaboration. The outpatient continuity clinic is a Primary Health Care, Inc., Federally Qualified Health Center.  The clinic is comprised of a diverse patient population spanning all age groups, socio-economic classes, and different ethnic groups.

The Mercy Internal Medicine Residency program is a three-year program, with ten residents at each postgraduate level.  Inpatient Internal Medicine teams include residents, interns and students who work with the faculty to provide 24 hour coverage for this service. The residents rotate through a wide spectrum of sub-specialties including behavioral health, cardiology, critical care, endocrinology, geriatrics, GI, hematology/oncology, infections disease, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology and rheumatology.  Elective rotations are available to the senior residents.

The program faculty instructs and supervises the residents in the inpatient and outpatient setting.  Faculty member include general internist as well as fellowship-trained physicians.  The residents have opportunity to participate in procedures related to the practice of internal medicine.

The program has a comprehensive didactic plan to assist residents in their preparation to practice state-of-the art internal medicine. Our curriculum incorporates traditional lecture format, case-based learning as well as simulated patient encounters and team building exercises.  Included in the curriculum are also morning report, m & m discussions, lectures, multidisciplinary conferences, and Journal Club.  Residents are active participants at the OPTI Resident Education Days at Des Moines University.
