Situated on the top three floors (Levels 2, 3 and 4), Mercy’s new Women & Infants’ Center is designed to provide state-of-the-art technology to mothers, babies and families throughout the birthing and post-partum experience.

The Mother/Baby Unit on Level 2 features luxurious private rooms that include sleep sofas for the labor partner, double beds, flat panel televisions with DVD players, wireless Internet, refrigerators, room service for all meals (including a complimentary meal for labor partners) and dining areas. In addition, there are large gathering spaces where families can get to know their new loved ones, including a beautiful waiting area in the atrium complete with a fireplace.

The Birthing Unit is located on Level 3. Care is provided in spacious, private birthing suites with modern birthing beds, Jacuzzi tubs, sleep sofas for the labor partner, flat panel televisions with DVD players, wireless Internet, refrigerators and large windows.

Level 3 also houses the Maternity Triage and Treatment Unit that is designed to care for women when problems or concerns arise during pregnancy. This unit is staffed by board-certified perinatologists and a specialized nursing staff and is equipped to perform lab tests, fetal monitoring and ultrasound and offers special services like pool therapy, physical therapy and telephone cameras.

On Level 4, families will find an outstanding new facility to provide the highest quality of care and the best possible outcomes in cases in which babies are born prematurely or with special medical needs. The expanded Variety Neonatal Intensive Care Unit features private patient rooms with special bassinets to provide an enhanced healing environment for babies, sofa beds for parents to facilitate bedside comfort, wireless Internet, refrigerators and large windows with breathtaking views of Des Moines. In addition, the patient-centered unit includes two centralized nursing stations, two family transition apartments so families can learn how to care for their babies under the supervision of our expert staff and a family lounge with a library and sibling play area.

The Women & Infants’ Center at Mercy also features the Little Miracles Lactation Boutique & Gift Shop. Located on Level 2 outside of the Mother/Baby Unit, the boutique provides supplies and advice for new families – including breast pump sales and rentals, breastfeeding pillows, nursing bras, breast pump accessories and more. In addition, the gift shop carries fresh flowers, clothing and gifts for babies and new parents.
