Dr. Deming honored with national Quality of Life Award

May 6, 2011

Dr. Richard Deming, medical director of Mercy Cancer Center, was recently named a recipient of the prestigious Lane Adams Quality of Life Award by the American Cancer Society (ACS). He is one of 11 cancer care providers nationwide honored with this award. Deming will be recognized at a Quality of Life Awards dinner and ceremony May 12 at the ACS annual board meeting in Atlanta.

The honor, awarded each year since 1988, recognizes the unsung heroes of cancer care who provide what Lane W. Adams, former American Cancer Society executive vice president, referred to as the “warm hand of service.” The award sheds light on the critical role that outstanding caregivers play in the healing process and offers local ACS divisions a way to honor special volunteers and community members.

Compassionate caregivers around the country do extraordinary work on the front lines in the fight against cancer. These doctors, nurses, social workers, and other professionals offer comfort, courage, and inspiration to people facing cancer and their families. They go above and beyond the call of duty every day, often overlooked for the service and support they provide.

“I am honored to have been chosen as recipient of a Lane Adams Quality of Life Award,” Dr. Deming said. “But I believe it’s our patients who are truly deserving of awards. I am humbled to accept this award in honor and memory of all the courageous, compassionate and inspiring patients that I have had the opportunity to serve,” he added.

The objective of the award is to recognize and reward individuals like Dr. Deming who innovatively and consistently provide excellent and compassionate skilled care, counsel, and/or service to persons with cancer and their families. Recognizing the special role these people play in the lives of cancer patients often serves as an example and encourages others to step forward and provide meaningful support to people facing cancer in the community and across the nation.
