Mercy College launches tuition discount plan to put Iowan's back to work for second year

February 9, 2010

For the second consecutive year, Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCHS) announced a tuition discount plan to assist unemployed workers to help them make the transition into a health care career at the end of a one-, two- or four-year education in one of the 15 academic degrees offered by the state’s largest undergraduate health science college.

Courtney Shelquist, a recipient of the 2009 Tuition Summer Discount Program said, “I always knew I wanted a career in healthcare, but after a couple of years with a medical device company, I found myself without a job. Without having been laid off, I don't know if I ever would have pursued my dreams of becoming a nurse.  Initially, I was hesitant about the cost of tuition, but the Summer Tuition Discount Program helped alleviate those concerns. I am now in my second semester of the nursing program and love every minute of it. I like to say nursing chose me before I chose it.”

The Mercy College Summer 2010 Tuition Discount Plan will offer much-needed tuition relief for those seeking to register for classes this summer.  Summer tends to be a time of reduced financial assistance from traditional financial sources.  Discounts range from $500 to $1,750, depending on the number of courses enrolled.  To earn the discount, prospective students need to meet College admission requirements and have documentation that they were laid off after Sept. 1, 2008.

President Barbara Decker, in making the announcement, said, “Health care continues to need direct, patient care employees – and this tuition discount plan will be a boost to those who are looking to start a new career in a relatively short period of time.”

In preparation for the anticipated inquiries, the College will hold two Healthcare Career Seminars, targeted for unemployed workers, to answer the numerous questions about the tuition discount plan, what various career fields offer for job stability and growth, and the kinds of preparation and expectations that are involved in learning to provide direct patient care, which is the hallmark of a Mercy College education.  The seminars are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and again from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the Mercy College campus.  Pre-registration can be completed online at

Mercy College of Health Sciences is the only Catholic college in Central Iowa and is the largest of the health science colleges in the state with a fall 2009 enrollment of 778 full- and part-time students.  The college launched a new Bachelor of Health Science (pre-medicine) program in the fall of 2009.
