Mercy College Launches Tuition Discount Plan to put Iowans back to work

February 25, 2009

Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCHS) announced today a tuition discount plan to assist recently unemployed workers to help them make the transition into a health care career at the end of a one-, two- or four-year education in one of the 14 academic degrees offered by the state’s largest health science college.

President Barbara Decker, in making the announcement, said, “Health care continues to need direct, patient care employees – and this tuition discount plan will be a boost to those who are looking to start a new career in a relatively short period of time.”

The College Board approved the Mercy College Summer 2009 Tuition Discount Plan to offer much-needed tuition relief for those seeking to register for classes this summer.  Summer tends to be a time of reduced financial assistance from traditional financial sources.  Discounts range from $500 to $1,750, depending on the number of courses enrolled.  To earn the discount, prospective students need to meet College admission requirements and have documentation that they were laid off after Sept. 1, 2008.

In preparation for the anticipated inquiries, the College will hold two Health Care Career Seminars, targeted for unemployed workers, to answer the numerous questions about the tuition discount plan, what various career fields offer for job stability and growth, and the kinds of preparation and expectations that are involved in learning to provide direct patient care, which is the hallmark of a Mercy College education.  The seminars are scheduled for March 7 and 11, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Mercy College campus.  Pre-registration can be completed online at www.mchs.edu/discountplan.

Mercy College of Health Sciences is the only Catholic college in Central Iowa and is the largest of the health science colleges in the state with a spring 2009 enrollment of 674 full- and part-time students.  The college will launch a new Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program and a Bachelor of Health Science (pre-medicine) program in fall 2009.
