Mercy West Lakes welcomes its first baby

September 11, 2009

Mercy Medical Center – West Lakes, a replacement hospital for Mercy Capitol, grew by two feet – two tiny feet – on Thursday, Sept. 10, when it celebrated the arrival of the first baby born at the hospital – and the first baby in history to be born at a West Des Moines hospital.

Marissa Johnson and Josh Stewart of Linden are proud parents of a baby boy, Teagan Alexzander Stewart. Teagan was born at 5:51 p.m. on Sept. 10 and weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces. He is the first child for the couple.

Teagan and his parents will have a jump start on his college savings, thanks to being awarded a $1,000 College Savings Iowa 529 Plan account by State of Iowa Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald.

“Little Teagan has quite a bit of growing to do before going off to college, and the money in this account will grow right alongside him,” stated Fitzgerald, plan administrator. “Even in this economy some things are certain: children still grow up fast and a college education isn’t getting any cheaper. I encourage families to stay focused on their long-term goals and start saving for college as soon as possible.”

“We are very thrilled to have Teagan added to our family,” says new mom Marissa Johnson. “I was very excited about Mercy West Lakes opening and offering maternity services, as it is closer to our home."

“We are excited to celebrate the birth of Teagan a healthy baby boy,” says Marilyn Nugent, Mercy West Lakes director of Birthing Services. “We will continue to celebrate the birth of each baby born at Mercy West Lakes as it is a testament to the strong community support and of the quality of care that our staff and physicians provide to mothers and babies."

Everyone at Mercy wishes Teagan and his parents good health in the future.

Mercy West Lakes Birthing Services offers low-risk moms an alternative location for their full-term baby's arrival. Mercy West Lakes features ten private labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum (LDRP) suites that blend warmth and comfort of a home-like setting.
