The goal of joint replacement surgery is to relieve pain, restore independence, and return patients to active participation in daily activities.
Total hip replacement and total knee replacement
Nationally recognized for expertise in total knee and hip replacement, the Mercy Center for Joint Replacement, helps patients achieve this goal by emphasizing wellness and maximizing recovery efforts.
Each year, more than 1,200 total hip and knee replacements are performed at Mercy by surgeons with extensive knowledge and education in diagnosing, treating and managing all conditions of the hip and knee—including congenital deformities, degenerative diseases, fractures and trauma care.
Knee replacement, also known as total knee replacement
or knee arthoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is
performed to remove worn, diseased or damaged bone
and cartilage and replace it with an artificial joint, or
prosthesis, that is made of metal and plastic. Undergoing
knee replacement surgery can help relieve pain and allows
patients to return to normal everyday activities. For those
who have become bow-legged or knock-kneed over the
years, it can also straighten the legs into a more natural
position

arthritis limits everyday activities, such as walking and
bending.

Shoulder replacement is an option for patients who suffer from joint dysfunction due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or severe trauma, such as a shoulder fracture. It may be recommended for patients have have the following symptoms:
- pain that continues while resting
- stiffness in the shoulder that limits use of the arm
