Camp is normally for kids, right? Well, not anymore! Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines is proud to offer Spine Camp – a program of Mercy Neurosurgery that is intended for patients who are preparing for, undergoing and recovering from spinal surgery.
Spine Camp patients are individuals who have decided to take a proactive approach to health care in order to return to an active lifestyle. This all-inclusive program educates patients and family members about spine surgery, provides a postoperative program to help patients make a full recovery and prepares patients to go home and gradually return to normal activities.
At Spine Camp, patients are up, dressed in their own clothes and ready to be discharged from the hospital just one to four days after surgery. Depending on the type of surgery you may go home the day after surgery. It provides patients a unique pre- and post-surgical experience where “fun” is a key component of the process.
As part of the program, family members are strongly encouraged to serve as a “coach” for the patient. The coach not only attends therapy with the patient, but also learns about the patient’s recovery process so he or she can assist the patient at home during the weeks immediately following surgery. Spine Camp “counselors” include physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, patient care technicians and physical and occupational therapists specializing in total spine care. This multidisciplinary team will work closely with you to help you achieve the best possible results from spine surgery.
Mercy will work coordinate an in-house referral following any qualifying spinal procedures. Questions? Call us at (515) 358-0100, or, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
