General Surgery Residency Program Curriculum

Post-Graduate Year 1: (General Surgery Special Emphasis Internship Program)

  • General Surgery, Consults, Night Float: 7 months
  • Trauma: 3 months
  • Critical Care: 2 months
  • Emergency Medicine: 1 month

Outpatient clinic experience is obtained in the General Surgery, Critical Care, Colorectal and Surgical Oncology rotations.

Post-Graduate Year 2:

  • General Surgery: 8 months
  • Trauma Surgery: 2 months
  • Pediatric/Transplant Surgery: 2 months

Post-Graduate Year 3:

  • General Surgery: 7 months
  • Vascular Surgery: 2 months
  • GI Surgery: 1 month
  • Trauma Surgery: 1 month
  • Pediatric/Transplant Surgery: 1 month

Post-Graduate Year 4:

  • General Surgery: 10 months
  • Surgery Electives: 1 month
  • Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery: 1 month

Post-Graduate Year 5:

  • General Surgery: 12 months

  • Mortality & Morbidity Conferences: Weekly
  • Staff Lectures: Monthly
  • Resident Lectures: Monthly
  • Cases Presentations: Monthly
  • Breast Conference: Quarterly
  • Critical Care Conferences: Monthly
  • OMM Conferences: Bimonthly
  • GI Conferences: Bimonthly
  • Vascular Conferences: Bimonthly
  • Tumor Board: Weekly
  • Trauma Conference: Monthly
  • Trauma M&M: 8 times a year
  • Ethics Conference: Quarterly
  • SCORE Topics: Monthly
  • Cadaver Labs: 4-6 times a year
  • Journal Club: Monthly
  • Guest Lecturers
  • Laparoscopic Simulator Experience - lab-based training sessions
  • Standardized Patient Assessment - lab-based training sessions (SPAL)

    All residents have a Adjunct Instructor Appointment at Des Moines University to provide lectures and surgical skills laboratory instruction.
