Excellence in Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery Center for Excellence Seal

Mercy Bariatric Surgery has a team approach to weight loss. Mercy offers not just the surgery, but provides the proper tools to prepare patients for a new life, including diet and exercise instruction and support groups. Patients meet with physicians, dietitians and behaviorists, among other health care specialists, who help evaluate co-morbidities (illnesses or conditions associated with obesity) such as hypertension, heart disease, pulmonary disease, sleep apnea and diabetes.

All of Mercy’s bariatric surgery procedures are performed at Mercy Medical Center–West Lakes located in West Des Moines— a CIGNA-certified hospital for bariatric surgery. This facility has been recognized for its commitment to highly specialized bariatric support which includes customized surgical facilities, recovery rooms, and skilled medical staff.

Mercy offers three bariatric surgical procedures: gastric bypass, gastric banding and gastric sleeve. The minimally-invasive technique used means:

  • less scarring
  • shorter hospital stays
  • less blood loss
  • less risk of infection

By demonstrating the highest quality of bariatric surgical care, Mercy has earned the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
