Chest Pain and Heart Attack Care

Chest pain may signal a serious problem - and at MercyOne, we treat all patients with chest pain seriously. More than a thousand people trusted MercyOne to care for them during a heart emergency last year.

Our Chest Pain Center, located in MercyOne Des Moines Emergency Care, is a dedicated area for patients with chest pain, angina, chest tightness or chest pressure to receive rapid evaluation, intervention and treatment.

Cardiac specialists are supported by advanced diagnostic imaging such as cardiac CT and coronary angiogram to provide quick diagnoses for chest pain patients. If a heart attack is indicated, our highly skilled doctors provide state-of-the-art treatment during the critical early stages of a cardiac event.

Advanced treatments and therapies available 24/7

With an expert cardiac team including an interventional cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon on call 24/7, we are able to provide advanced treatments, because every second counts;

  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) - keeps blood moving through the body and keeps blood gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide) in balance. For example, ECMO is used for life support after a massive heart attack.
  • Intra-Aortic balloon pump for cardiogenic shock
  • Hypothermic therapy
    • A process used to rapidly lower the body temperature in order to prevent or reduce brain damage in a cardiac arrest patient.
  • Door to balloon time - 30 minutes faster than national benchmark
    • MercyOne’s STEMI protocol ensures fast care for cardiac emergencies wherever you are because every second counts. Our door-to-balloon time (the average time for a heart attack patient to get from the emergency room to the catheterization lab where we restore blood flow) averages about 30 minutes faster than the national benchmark, to provide potentially lifesaving treatments much sooner.
  • Angioplasty and stent placement
  • Coronary bypass surgery (CABG)
  • Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support and implantation
