Level II Trauma Center

In 2015, Mercy Medical Center was verified as a pediatric Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. Mercy also was re-verified as an adult Level II Trauma Center. These achievements recognize Mercy Trauma Services’ dedication to providing optimal trauma care for patients of all ages.

Key elements of this verification include 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, and prompt availability of care in specialties such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, pediatric emergency and critical care services, radiology and adult critical care.

Mercy Medical Center is a leader in trauma prevention, outreach and continuing education for trauma team members.

Chest Pain Center

Chest pain may signal a serious problem - and at Mercy, we treat all patients with chest pain seriously.

The Chest Pain Center, located in the Mercy Emergency Department, is the first Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care -accredited center in Central Iowa offering a dedicated area for chest pain patients to provide rapid evaluation, intervention and treatment. Cardiac specialists are supported by advanced diagnostic technology to provide quick diagnoses for chest pain patients.

Primary Stroke Center

Join Commission SealMercy Medical Center-Des Moines is central Iowa's only hospital to receive the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM and Primary Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, the nation’s predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. After Discharge - Trauma Clinic

After a trauma patient has been discharged, we recommended follow-up care at our trauma clinic by our specialized trauma care team.  The trauma clinic is located near the main entrance at Mercy Des Moines at 1111 6th Avenue.  Check in at the Outpatient Testing Desk. Trauma clinic is held Monday through Thursday, with appointments scheduled from 8:30-11 a.m. Schedule an appointment at (515) 643-2084.


Preventing Injuries 

Trauma is a preventable disease. Mercy Trauma Services is dedicated to providing injury prevention education to health care professionals, patients and the community. Mercy Trauma Services collaborates with the Metro Trauma Committee to provide area high schools with a distracted driving prevention program, works with the Iowa Department of Public Health to provide an older adult fall prevention program, and assists our Children’s Emergency Center with pediatric prevention initiatives.

Mercy West Lakes - Emergency

As a community hospital, Mercy West Lakes' board-certified emergency physicians and nurses provide initial evaluation, diagnostic testing and surgery and, when needed, transfer patients requiring a higher level of care to the ED at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines.

Specialized Senior Care

Mercy Medical Center – West Lakes Emergency Department is the first hospital in central Iowa to provide senior-friendly care for older patients.

When older patients present in the Mercy West Lakes Emergency Department, they are assessed to determine what special needs they require during their visit, including a fall risk assessment. Mercy West Lakes Emergency Department has required all nursing staff to receive Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE) training. The emergency department has added the following amenities for older patients:

  • Private patient treatment rooms
  • Non-skid/non-glare floors for easier walking
  • An extra thick pressure-reducing mattress for comfortable rest and to minimize risk of an ulcer
  • Clocks with large numbers for easy readability
  • Portable amplifiers for hearing assistance
  • Reading glasses and magnifying glasses
  • Bedside commodes with rails
  • Natural lighting
  • Walker and other ambulation aids
  • Large call light buttons
